“Number One Chinese Restaurant” by Lillian Li is set in the Beijing Duck House in Rockville, Maryland, a beloved Chinese restaurant. It explores the lives and relationships of the restaurant’s staff.

Owner Jimmy Han hopes to upgrade the restaurant, Johnny and Annie want to mend their strained family ties, and Nan and Ah-Jack consider turning their friendship into something more. Meanwhile, Nan’s son, Pat, gets involved in a dangerous game with Annie, leading to a family crisis.

The novel is a multi-voiced, poignant, and darkly funny exploration of family dynamics, youth, aging, and the complexities of parent-child relationships in the restaurant setting.
