The Color of Air by Gail Tsukiyama is a historical novel set in 1935 on the Big Island of Hawaii as the Mauna Loa volcano begins to stir. The story follows a tight-knit Japanese American community whose members are drawn together when Daniel, a young doctor, returns home and must confront long-buried secrets. Through interconnected voices, the novel explores love, loss, resilience, and the healing power of family and community. As the volcano’s ash fills the air, characters face the past and find strength in one another during a time of uncertainty.
