“The Buddha in the Attic” by Julie Otsuka tells the poignant story of Japanese “picture brides” who immigrated to early 20th-Century America to marry men they had only seen in photographs. The novel follows their journey across the ocean, their disillusionment with their new lives, and their struggles to adapt to a foreign culture while facing discrimination and prejudice.
