Lady Tan’s Circle of Women by Lisa See
“Lady Tan’s Circle of Women” is a historical novel set during China’s Ming dynasty (1368-1644), focusing on the life of Tan Yunxian, a woman born into privilege but raised by her grandmother, a female doctor. Yunxian learns traditional Chinese medicine and forms a close friendship with Meiling, a midwife-in-training. However, after an arranged marriage, Yunxian faces societal constraints but strives to make a lasting impact through her medical knowledge. The novel explores the power of their friendship and Yunxian’s determination to break free from traditional roles.
