“The Last Story of Mina Lee” is an unconventional novel that explores the profound impact of secrets in the lives of a Korean immigrant mother and her daughter, Margot Lee.
Margot becomes concerned when her mother, Mina, stops responding to her calls. She makes a surprise trip to Koreatown, Los Angeles, only to discover Mina’s suspicious death.
In her quest for truth, Margot uncovers her mother’s past as a Korean War orphan and an undocumented immigrant, revealing how little she knew about Mina. The narrative also flashes back to Mina’s arrival in America 30 years earlier, when she unexpectedly falls in love and sets off a chain of events with repercussions spanning decades.
Told from both mother and daughter perspectives, “The Last Story of Mina Lee” is a powerful debut novel that delves into identity, family, secrets, and the concept of belonging.
