In “When We Were Orphans,” Kazuo Ishiguro tells the chilling story of Christopher Banks, a renowned child detective in 1930s London who embarks on a desperate search for his long-lost sister, who had vanished years before. His quest takes him to war-torn Shanghai, a city shrouded in mystery and danger. As Christopher delves deeper into the city’s underbelly, he uncovers a web of deceit and betrayal, forcing him to confront the shadowy past he has tried to bury and the fragility of memory itself.
