Peking Glass Vases

We are a pair of Peking glass who that started our journey in the late 18th Century from China. Peking glass, also known in China as Tao Piao Ping, originated in the 18th Century.  We are from those early years. Originally, Peking glass was used to make snuff bottles and evolved to other forms such as my twin and me. Our base is of a traditional opaque white. We were then dipped into a beautiful cobalt blue glass, one layer at a time, which created a depth in which the artist could carve to create designs.  As portions of the blue were carved away, layers of color were revealed.

We were discovered at a Sewickley Antique Show by Mary Hulton Phillips, founder of The Maridon Museum, in 1976.  We made our home with her until the opening of the museum in 2004. Today, we reside in the Side Gallery of the museum among other interesting and some unusual companions.  Please stop to visit.
