Grandmother With Children – Ivory Carving

Grandmothers are just the best! We have been spending endless hours and days frolicking for these crabs since the Meiji Period (1867-1912). Grandmother has been teaching us how to search clams to become resourceful and independent. As you can see our baskets are getting quite full!

We were created in Japan for export to the West and in 1987 we were discovered at an antique show by Mary Hulton Phillips, founder of The Maridon Museum. We had a wonderful home with her until the museum opened in 2004. You can find us in the Rear Gallery Ivory Exhibit among our many other ivory companions. Please visit.
