SUMMARY:August Book Club: Midnight in Broad Daylight by Pamela Rotner Sakamoto
DESCRIPTION:3:00 p.m.\, Thursday\, August 26\, 2021\nMidnight in Broad Daylight by Pamela Rotner Sakamoto\n \nAlternating between the American and Japanese perspectives\, Midnight in Broad Daylight captures the uncertainty and intensity of those charged with the fighting as well as the deteriorating home front of Hiroshima—as never told before in English—and provides a fresh look at the dropping of the first atomic bomb. Intimate and evocative\, it is an indelible portrait of a resilient family\, a scathing examination of racism and xenophobia\, an homage to the tremendous Japanese American contribution to the American war effort\, and an invaluable addition to the historical record of this extraordinary time. \nPlease join us for all our upcoming in-person Book Club meetings. We also will offer Zoom platform meetings for those not comfortable meeting in person at this time. \nClick here to download the flyer for all the book club meetings. To register\, or if you have questions\, please call 724-282-0123 or email info@maridon.org. \nSponsored in part by Pennsylvania Humanities Council \n

SUMMARY:2-Day Film Series: Last Man Standing
DESCRIPTION:Join us for film and discussion with our special presenter\, Charles “Bud” Glendenning. We will view and compare a Japanese-made film to the American version over two days. \n2nd Film: Last Man Standing\nLast Man Standing is an American remake of Yojimbo. John Smith is an amoral gunslinger in the days of Prohibition. On the lam from his latest (unspecified) exploits\, he happens upon the town of Jericho\, Texas. Actually\, calling Jericho a town would be too generous–it has become more like a ghost town\, since two warring gangs have ‘driven off all the decent folk.’ Smith sees this as an opportunity to play both sides off against each other\, earning himself a nice piece of change as a hired gun. Despite his strictly avowed mercenary intentions\, he finds himself risking his life for his\, albeit skewed\, sense of honor. \nClick here to download the flyer.  To register\, or if you have questions\, please call 724-282-0123 or email info@maridon.org. \nFree to the public. SUMMARY:NCTA - SCREENSHOT:ASIA present Edo Avant Garde with Linda Hoaglund
DESCRIPTION:Edo Avant-Garde reveals the untold story of the vital role Japanese artists of the Edo era (1603 – 1868) played in developing “modern art.” During the Edo era\, Japan prospered in peaceful isolation from Western powers\, while audacious artists innovated abstraction\, minimalism\, surrealism and the illusion of 3-D. Their originality is most striking in images of the natural world depicted with gold leaf on large-scale folding screens that anticipate 20th century installation art. In groundbreaking interviews with scholars and priests\, the film traces the artists’ original visions to their reverence for nature\, inspired by Buddhism and Shinto animism.\n \n\nLOCATION & TIME:\n7:00pm – 9:00pm (Eastern Time) / 6:00pm – 8:00pm (Central Time)\nPlease use this link to register.
