DESCRIPTION:Thank you for all your interest in our Pysanky Collectors event. Registration is now closed\, as we have reached capacity. If you did not get to register\, please look for photos after the March 23rd event.\nThe Maridon Museum is pleased to announce a first-time exhibit and presentation of the art form creation of exquisite Ukrainian Easter Eggs. \nClick here to download the flyer. \nJohn Franchuk will demonstrate the Wax Resistant (Batik) Method of creating these little masterpieces. He became interested in making pysanky when he was in the seventh grade. His church had a social organization for teenagers and offered the art of making Pysanky as a project. John was eager to learn and started making two or three eggs a year while he was in high school and college. When he began teaching school he made a few for friends and family during the Lenten period. Since John’s retirement\, he began to make these creations more frequently. \nNow\, we have a chance to meet this master and learn about this fascinating art form. Ukrainian Eggs will be available for purchase. Also\, Kits for creating your own little object of art will be available for purchase. \nReservations are required – Space is limited. DESCRIPTION:Registration is closed for this class.\nJoin The Maridon Museum as it hosts the Ikebana International Pittsburgh Chapter for an introductory class in Ikebana from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. on Saturday\, June 8\, 2024. The class will focus on studying the Sogetsu Ikebana style. \n$75/student—includes materials for the class\, which the attendee can take home. It seats 12 people\, but space is limited—reservations are required. Please Call – 724.282.0123. \nWorkshop participants will learn the foundational techniques of Sogetsu ikebana\, enjoy a demonstration by lead sensei\, and create their ikebana arrangement with select branches and fresh flowers. Sogetsu Pittsburgh is a collective study group founded in 1990 by Reiko Nakajima and Joan Walter.  Along with studying the Sogetsu Ikebana curriculum through workshops\, the group introduces the practice to the public and community through collaborations with various organizations\, venues\, and artists. Sogetsu is a school of ikebana founded in Japan in 1927 by artist Sofu Teshigahara on the premise that traditional ikebana – originally intended for altars\, the tokonoma\, and tea ceremonies – could be expanded and be created “anytime\, anywhere\, by anyone.” Sogetsu incorporates influences\, including modern sculpture\, abstract art\, architecture\, and design\, while honoring custom and particular techniques. \nKebana\, or the “way of flowers\,” is a traditional Japanese art form that involves the arrangement of flowers and other natural materials. Its origins can be traced back to the sixth century when China introduced Buddhism to Japan. Simple flower arrangements were a way of honoring Buddha\, and this practice became the more formalized art of Ikebana. Today\, as a popular living visual art\, classical arrangements have evolved to include freestyle\, emphasizing shape\, line\, and form to create a harmonious relationship between the natural materials and the space around them.
